After a long and hard bit of work I finally managed to complete all 31 prompts for each day of Whumptober! I thought I would share the completed list here, along with some comments on my process.

Overall I wrote for six different fandoms (two being subsets of the same and another only in a crossover), with the vast majority of the fics being Bleach, at two dozen even! Needless to say, Ichigo Kurosaki and Uryū Ishida had a very bad October at my hands.

It was a big undertaking but I’m very proud to have completed it. I managed to write a whopping 113,000 words in total for the event. Quite a lot of heavy lifting–or writing, as it were.
In this post I’m going to talk about each fic I wrote a bit as well as link the titles so you can check them out if you’re interested!

My 31 Whumptober Fics:

Day One|Race against the clock: ‘These Are His Revolutions’
(The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask)

This was the very first prompt I saw on the day the list dropped and immediately I thought of Majora’s Mask. That idea stayed with me all the way to the first of October when I published it. The title was taken from the first season of Snowpiercer, a show that inspired several of my other stories for this challenge, and it fit the concept of the game perfectly.

Day Two|Role Reversal/Body Swap: ‘Moving In Parallel (Sheem Dagoze)’

This is my longest story for this entire challenge, because–it seemed to just keep going when I wrote it, keep needing more to resolve itself. It was great fun.

Day Three|Shivering: ‘Ultima Thule’
(The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom)

I had to write a fic for Mount Agaat. It’s a bit inevitable for me and the fact that my account didn’t have one sooner is a bit tragic. This idea was in my head before the prompts even dropped, and I’m happy to finally have it out. The title was taken from a word of the day screensaver on a computer, actually. But you know what? It works. This one’s a bit of a parallel to day twelve’s fic, ‘Lightroot.’

Day Four|Hypnosis/Sensory Deprivation: ‘Ibara (The Dragon’s Thorns)’
(Bleach)

In which I had far too much fun analyzing and destroying the psyche of one Uryū Ishida. (It happens again, later in the month.) The prompts for day four were screaming at me to use them for Sosuke Aizen, so I didn’t have much choice.

Day Five|Sunburn/Heatstroke/Healing Salve: ‘Safflina’
(The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom)

This fic was borne out of my desire to get to see Riju and Zelda interact, because I think they’d get along very well.

Day Six|It’s not my blood: ‘Shada Naw (Red Giveaway)’
(Bleach)

One of those fics I hadn’t even thought of until shortly before I sat down writing it, and it all just came out. It turned out quite tragic and whumpy, but I’m pleased with the result.

Day Seven|Magic with a price: ‘Evil’s Soft First Touches’
(Once Upon a Time)

This prompt was destined to be used for Once Upon a Time so I took full advantage. I’ve also always wanted to read a story exploring how Baelfire would handle having his own magic and not gotten much luck, so it was great to finally write my own.

Day Eight| Leave a light on: ‘An Uplifting Device (Sinakawak)’

This was the very first fic I finished for this challenge! I think it’s just, well, sweet.

Day Nine|Bruises/Broken window: ‘Helleborus niger’
(Bleach)

Yet another fic of mine that turns Isshin Kurosaki into an awful father. What can I say–it’s a dynamic I love exploring based on all the nasty things he did to poor Ichigo in canon. This one is a thematic parallel to day 26’s story.

Day Ten| I can’t think straight: ‘Ich Liebe Dich’
(Bleach)

The least whumpy of all my Whumptober fics, but I’d like to think it’s sweet anyway.

Day Eleven|Loneliness: ‘Schrödinger’s Strawberry’
(Bleach)

My first ever 5+1 fic! I was excited to try this format and I think it ended up well. (Fun fact, the title was originally slated as a chapter title in my first longfic that eventually got cut!)

Day Twelve|Underground caverns: ‘Lightroot’
(The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom)

I put a lot of my own experiences in the Depths in Tears of the Kingdom in this one, jumpscares and all. Poor Zelda.

Day Thirteen|Familial curse: ‘Love, the Dark One’
(Once Upon a Time)

Repurposed pieces from a multichapter fic I was never quite able to complete. I’m glad they’re finally out in the world to be read, though!

Day Fourteen|Left for dead: ‘A Zanpakutō in the Dark’
(Bleach)

So I definitely have used this title before, but shh. (In other words: the fic where Grimmjow uses Ichigo as a pincushion.)

Day Fifteen|Childhood trauma: ‘Here Comes the Rain Again’
(Bleach)

Childhood trauma basically meant that I needed Ichigo to have a nice crying session on Uryu’s lap, something I always find cathartic to write.

Day Sixteen|Necrosis/I can’t feel anything: ‘Tagetes patula ‘Durango”
(Bleach)

This fic’s title is a reference to the (dubious) fourth season of the Umbrella Academy, with it being the scientific name for the real Durango marigold. It’s appropriate considering the theme of Quincies vs. hollows within. Also…I felt guilty after rereading this and posting it considering the ending.

Day Seventeen|Nowhere else to go: ‘A Weighty Decision (Yah Rin)’
(The Pendragon Adventure)

A Pendragon fic! The only one written in the entire challenge! A short introspective piece I quite enjoyed writing.

Day Eighteen|Loss of Identity: ‘Echoes of Liquid Days’
(Bleach)

A bit of a different interpretation of the day’s prompts, where I did a reincarnation AU instead.

Day Nineteen|One way out: ‘Nobody’s Listening!’
(Bleach)

The prompt reminded me of Andor, so I borrowed another episode title for the fic.

Day Twenty|Emotional angst/Shoulder to cry on: ‘Unlit Blessing (Siyamotsus)’
(Bleach)

I wasn’t initially intending on this fic ending the way it did but I’m glad it did. A bit guilty for the readers, sure, but pleased nonetheless. Hurt/comfort, one of my favourite tropes, to the maximum.

Day Twenty-One|Spirit possession/Body horror: ‘The Corrosion of Humanity’
(Bleach)

This is not the first time I’ve played around with this particular trope when it comes to Ichigo. What can I say–I have predictable taste. The ending surprised even me and hurt more than enough to make up for it.

Day Twenty-Two|Reopening old wounds: ‘Cicatrix’
(Bleach)

This might be one of my favourites. I love giving characters scars as hallmarks of canon trauma even when canon doesn’t give it to them, so this was a blast to write. I went so far as to check my manga to make sure the scars mentioned were in the right spot! Plus, I was able to bring attention to one of the most tragically ignored horrors that Ichigo went through–namely, Fullbring training–which was satisfying in its own right.

Day Twenty-Three|Forced choice: ‘Inside the Box (Kihiro Moh)’
(Bleach)

This one got a little bit out of hand, quite quickly, as far as being dark, but I really enjoyed it nonetheless. The plotline was something fun–well, not fun, but fun to write–and interesting to work out.

Day Twenty-Four|Forgotten: ‘The Ability to Rewind (Nachoyah)’
(Bleach)

Yes, I like writing amnesia. So what? (I also coined the tag ‘Zangetsu is a little shit’ for this one, which has long been needed in my opinion.)

Day Twenty-Five|Surgery: ‘Hemerocallis’
(Bleach, Uglies)

I’d been having the idea of making a Bleach Uglies AU for a while, and the ‘surgery’ prompt just put me over the edge. It was entirely self-indulgent, but hey–I enjoyed writing it.

Day Twenty-Six|Breakfast table/Parting words regret: ‘Ipomoea alba’
(Bleach)

This one was the mirror to day nine’s, where I had Ryuken Ishida take his turn at being the bad parent. Of course, the Ishidas fight in very different ways than the Kurosakis, but neither are pleasant.

Day Twenty-Seven|Laboratory/Muzzled: ‘Hearts of Bone’
(Bleach)

The prompt ‘laboratory’ immediately invoked Mayuri Kurotsuchi to me, so naturally this fic went to the Department of Research and Development. It later evolved into a challenge to myself to write a fic rated explicit on violence alone, and I think I managed. This fic, well, I’d like to think isn’t really for the faint of heart. It is Mayuri, after all.

Day Twenty-Eight|Denial: ‘Dual Purpose (Takama Shiri)’
(Bleach)

The actual prompt fill is actually chapter two of this story (which is what I linked). I’d written the first chapter back in the summer, and had been considering adding a second chapter covering the Arrancar arc for a while. There is a third chapter in the works which I hope to get out by the end of the year!

Day Twenty-Nine|Fatigue/Burnout: ‘Sanctum‘
(Bleach)

Well, I wrote another fic expanding on the Fullbringer arc. I took a scene that in my opinion was far too short–Uryu getting to watch Ichigo cry–and blew it up into this oneshot I’m quite pleased with. It was the very last fic I finished for this challenge, but certainly not the least.

Day Thirty|What have I done?: ‘Sneakstrike (Sinatanika)’
(Bleach)

This fic has a bit of tonal dissonance from beginning to end, but it turned out well. It has another cameo from Ichigo’s hollow–who is surprised?

Day Thirty-One|Asking for help/Therapy: ‘Forward or Backward? (Tauyosipun)’
(Bleach)

Ah, another fic where I give the teenage veterans of the Winter War trauma. I think this went well, though, and has paved the way for similar scenes in future projects of mine.
